McFarlane finds that Richardson's prose is at its best in "the darkest places" of the trilogy where the "giant trap" of life closes on "individual human lives". These scenes are especially powerful when they foreshadow events later in the book, but they are often deflated by superfluous comment and loose prose, leaving only particular sections of the trilogy worthy of commendation.
