When the Melbourne Herald, originally a morning newspaper, changed to an evening publication on 4 January 1869, retrenched staff formed a company to publish the Melbourne Daily Telegraph, managed by Charles Somerton. Somerton saw an opportunity to publish a weekly companion publication and the Weekly Times was launched on 11 September 1869. When the Daily Telegraph ceased publication in 1892, the Weekly Times was acquired by the Herald's publisher.
