Husband and wife Tom and Wendy Whitton founded the Second Back Row Press in Manly in the 1970s. They compiled a number of guides to bookshops in Australian cities, and edited the Australasian Small Press Review, published by the press. From the early 1980s the press was located in the Blue Mountains, and the Whittons are the owners of Megalong Books, an independent bookshop in Leura, NSW.
