BiographyHistory

George Washington Carleton, who had previously been in business as a publisher in partnership with Edward and George Rudd, established the firm G. W. Carleton as a bookseller and publisher in New York in 1861. Carleton's own sketches had been published in magazines, and he successfully published the work of a range of humorists. Other publishing by the company included popular fiction, translations of European writers and reprints of English classics. When Carleton died in 1886, George Dillingham, who had been a partner since 1891, continued the business as the G. W. Dillingham Company.
