BiographyHistory

George Wellington Dillingham took over the George W. Carleton publishing company, where he had been first a clerk and then a partner, in 1886. The firm continued to publish many of Carleton's authors, including a number of humorists. Dillingham recognised that many readers were women, and sought out female novelists. The firm increased its publication of popular material, particularly in cheap novels and novelisations of popular plays.

Dillingham died in 1895 but the firm continued under the directorship of his son Frank A. Dillingham and others, under it went bankrupt in 1916.
