Clinda is stricken to the heart and her selfish hypocritical father does not relieve her loss. Stephen Wild and the store-owner, Mrs Lovell, care for her and comfort her on the diggings. The successful and noble mine owner John Somerfield also loves her and it is to his health that Clinda's father directs his greed ... Patchy, often tedious romance of the goldfields with mainly historic interest. (PB)

He is nearly killed by thieves when the younger of his ex-partners dreams of his predicament and they set out to rescue him. Old Will is wounded and death approaches ... Set in an isolated gully not a general goldfield. Sentimental, warm tale. (PB)

1 Ethel Luke Darrell , 1874 single work short story Station hands on a Victorian property - ex-convicts - plot to rob the owner and overseer of money recently brought up to buy some cattle. The owner's wife Mary and her sister, Ethel, are left alone with a young boy while he goes to meet the cattle with Thornton, the overseer. Death and injury result from a skirmish that night - Ethel's marksmanship taking its toll. (PB)

He sends her to Melbourne to be educated but when he visits and finds her a lady he banishes himself overseas. Tale told by a worker to his employer during a buggy ride. Simple. Touching, in parts.
