An heiress is wooed by a reluctant eldest son to win her wealth to his poor but noble family. Much of the duty falls on to his younger brother, and thrown together they fall in love. He leaves with his men to fight and die in the Crimean War, and in time she marries his brother "and paid off the mortgage upon Redhall." Well written with nice ironic edge; light. (PB)

A poor artist buys a child from the father who beats her. Several years later she is claimed by her grandfather - an earl - and it is several more years before she confesses her love for the artist who rescued her but never spoke his love. Pleasant but unlikely romance. Familiar theme. (PB)

Childhood friends become estranged through their love for Maude Ethelridge. She loves Paul Carylon but refuses to stop seeing Angus Cameron. Paul and Angus quarrel and Angus dies in a river crossing accident. Paul breaks off his engagement to Maude and on his deathbed confessed he knew the bridge was washed away. Tragic romance - predictable but reasonably written. (PB)

Sir Maurice Gwynne's return to his Welsh home introduces him to the poor but spirited ward of the local doctor. It is only when - spurred on by the doctor's calculating wife - that she advertises for a position as governess that he realises he wants to offer her a situation himself ... Light romance with a dash of spirit. (PB)
