She pays handsomely for it and his reputation is made when the real sitter, an actress, returns for her commission. (PB)

The true man, with one arm lost in the war, follows her to the kitchen and proposes - and only then does she tell him of the inheritance received that day. An engagement is broken off when notes are mixed and the handsome farmer mistakenly accepts a fishing invitation and declines to accompany his fiancee to a newly wedded couple's home. All is mended when he is nearly killed rescuing her from her runaway horse - the mixup of notes is discovered during his convalescence. A rival is killed in the runaway horse incident. (PB)

A schoolboy is kind to a poor girl he accidentally hits with a stone during a fight. Years later his father's fortune lost and she adopted by a rich merchant they meet. Slowly love grows and is rewarded. Light; sentimental, some warmth. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , September vol. 27 no. 316 1891; (p. 20-22) An impoverished London artist paints the portrait of a beautiful merchant's daughter - and finds himself painting also her twin sister, dead for 3 years but visible to him. The sittings are interrupted by the girl's illness and she dies soon after. Interesting blend of the everyday merchant and the visionary daughter. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , November vol. 22 no. 258 1886; (p. 134-135) Set in Paris, the story of a woman abandoned by the father of her child who gives the baby to the foundling hospital. Thirty years later, after living lower each year, she returns to the hospital to discover what happened to her - and dies in the arms of the nun she became. Plain tale; mother is not condemned despite her 'weaknesses'. (PB)
