Alfred Ward Stephens arrived in Sydney in 1829 and worked initially at the Sydney Gazette newspaper. He then formed a partnership with Frederick Stokes and William McGarvie and the three men established a general printing business and also began publishing the Sydney Herald. (McGarvie did not remain in the partnership for long.)
During 1834 and 1835, Stephens was involved in a court action against Edward O'Shaughnessy, James Hay and William Watt (all of the Sydney Gazette). Although Stephens lost the case, he later employed O'Shaughnessy at the Herald.
From 1836 to 1839 Stephens ran the Herald as sole proprietor. He then sold the newspaper to Stokes and took up farming.
