1 Corridor Talk : Conversing with Tom O’Regan Meaghan Morris , 2021 single work criticism
— Appears in: Continuum : Journal of Media and Cultural Studies , vol. 35 no. 3 2021; (p. 397-400)

'Tom O’Regan’s vision of cultural policy in the 1990s was original and durable because he emphasized the rhetorical politics and enunciative contexts of policy statements as well as their propositional contents. Reflecting on some of the changes that have occurred in Australia since that time, my commemoration of Tom’s work explores the role of the “corridor” metaphor in his thinking.' 1 ‘The Great Australian Loneliness’ : On Writing an Inter-Asian Biography of Ernestine Hill Meaghan Morris , 2014 single work criticism
— Appears in: Journal of Intercultural Studies , vol. 35 no. 3 2014; (p. 238-249)
'The Great Australian Loneliness (1937) is a famous book of travel reportage by Ernestine Hill (1899–1972), a key figure in the mid-twentieth century shaping of popular media culture in Australia. Through her journalism she disseminated debate about the great public issues of her day: the status of Aboriginal peoples, immigration from Asia and the state’s role in national development. In this paper, I take the White Australian ‘loneliness’ her title invokes as a methodological challenge to situate both her life and the ethnically diverse sociability she actually described in an inter-Asian framework of analysis capable of unsettling those bonds between ethnicity and nationality that many twentieth-century writers worked so hard to secure. In the process, I argue for an ‘Australian Asian’ approach to cultural history.' (Publication abstract)

1 What Can a Gwei Por Do? Cynthia Rothrock's Hong Kong Career Meaghan Morris , 2012 single work essay
— Appears in: Inter-Asia Cultural Studies , vol. 13 no. 4 2012;
Cynthia Rothrock is a martial arts performance legend of the 1980s who began acting in Hong Kong cinema in the late 1980s and became a transnational video star in the 1990s. At the height of her fame she was mobbed by fans from Germany to Indonesia and she made a stadium erupt in the USA, where her thirty-odd films were not shown in cinemas; the subject of hundreds of media articles worldwide, she has been the object of adoring fan web-sites and ‘shrines’, and features today in lovingly curated YouTube galleries of her best fight scenes. Yet in academic studies her work in Hong Kong is praised but rarely discussed, while her career is often framed as one of failure to become a ‘real’ star—that is, to get a big screen role in Hollywood. This article explores some of the reasons for the difficulty we have in accounting for an American performer's contribution to Asian popular culture, asking how critical questions might be reframed to take better account of Rothrock's Asian work.
