Red Symons graduated in science, computer programming and pure maths. He established himself in the Australian popular entertainment industry as a musician, but he has also been an author, stage and screen performer, record producer, composer, columnist and presenter on radion station 774 ABC in Melbourne. He is perhaps best known in his role as guitarist with the band Skyhooks that had numerous hit records, including 'Living in the 70's', 'Ego is not a Dirty Word', 'Women in Uniform', 'Blue Jeans' and 'All My Friends are Getting Married'.
Symons became popular as a media personality during his years with the long-running national television program, Hey Hey It's Saturday. His other activities in popular culture include appearing on the Countdown television music show with a number one record, acting in the television serial Neighbours in its first week on air, escaping from the Big Brother house (another popular television show), losing a quarter of a million dollars on the television quiz show Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, being measured as Australia's Smartest Celebrity on The National IQ Test television show and writing music for the television police drama series Blue Heelers.
Symons has also written a regular column for the Age newspaper in Melbourne and he wrote the music for Australia's first condom commercial. He has appeared regularly on the corporate and arts speaking circuit, and has been part of the 'Brains Trust' on ABC TV's Einstein Factor.
