Virago Press was initiated in 1972 by Carmen Callil as 'the first mass-market publisher for 52% of the population - women.' The first official board meeting took place in 1973 with Carmen Callil, Rosie Boycott and Marsha Rowe in attendance. During the 1970s and 1980s Virago published some of the major feminist thinkers including Kate Millett, Adrienne Rich, Eva Figes, Angela Carter, Juliet Mitchell, Lynne Segal, Sheila Rowbotham, and Elaine Showalter.
In1982 Virago became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chatto, Virago, Bodley Head and Cape Group. From 1996 it has operated as an imprint of Little, Brown.
