1 y separately published work icon Type and Talk : A Journal on Advertising and Selling Edric Arthur De Gruchy (editor), 1925 Kirribilli : Deaton and Spencer , Z1325860 1925 periodical Trade & Type was a trade magazine, bringing news and ideas to printing and advertising businesses. It provided information on which accounts were going to which agencies and on the movement of advertising people between businesses. It suggested that 'type talks as well as copy', that prestige could be 'portrayed by illustration', and that national campaigns must include the country press. It examined Australian advertising's local, national, and international campaigns, and provided examples and comparisons with US advertisements and campaigns, but had 'little interest in English undertakings because we are, if anything, ahead of England in this regard'.

Dozer, 'a long, slim, cold, shiny, metal bomb' has a gentle dreamy nature and can't muster any enthusiasm for the war. He doesn't understand the use of making such perfect bombs only to destroy them. When he is finally dropped from a plane, he looks down and sees a road full of refugees, including children, and realises that 'his death would be theirs'.

Dozer takes some deep breaths and finds that he can float - birds come to rest upon him, and he drifts towards the people, hoping he can help, but they are all afraid of him and run away. He keeps them company as they make their long and arduous trek, the threat of death always upon them. He manages to warn them when he senses another plane approaching, and they begin to trust him. Dozer becomes the enemy of the planes - rushing at them to prevent them harming the people - and 'the angrier he grew, the more he dilated, until he was bigger than the largest 'plane of all' and he eventually drives them away.

Dozer guides the refugees to safety, off the roads and through the countryside to a town by the sea, where they all board an abandoned ship. In a miraculous turn of events, thousands of birds descend and help to pull the ship out to sea. All is going well until the planes, filled with bombs, return to settle Dozer once and for all. Dozer leads them away from the ship and on a wild goose chase until they run out of fuel.

When he returns, he sees a submarine about to launch a torpedo to destroy the boat, and 'a great rage suddenly maddened him. In his ears was a rushing noise... He wanted, with all his might, to explode!' The book ends with Dozer dropping recklessly towards the submarine, as his head is filled with the words, 'The Target! The Target! THE TARGET!'

2 y separately published work icon Island Interlude Stuart McDonald , 1937 single work novel adventure romance

An island in the coastal waters of Northern Queensland forms the setting, for the "Herald's" new serial, "Island Interlude," which begins publication on Monday. The author, Stuart McDonald, opens with a vivid description of the locality, with its turquoise-blue sea, laced with foam; its coral gardens; its wheeling gulls, and its lush, brilliant vegetation. Here, on Margarita Island, live Juan Christopher, a former worker in a pearling fleet, and his pretty daughter, Marguerite.

When it is disclosed that Christopher prizes a hoard of extremely valuable pearls in his modest home, experienced readers will be ready for a spectacular robbery scene. Sure enough, it comes. But before that, the author tells some stirring tales in retrospect about pearling luggers at Broome, and murders committed for priceless gems. There are tales of hurricanes which drive stout ships irresistibly on to the devouring teeth of reefs. A handsome stranger is washed up in stormy weather on the shore of Margarita. He and the girl are mutually attracted; and so appears the preamble to a love interest which persists throughout the tale. The weaving together of lively adventure and realistic scenic description makes "Island Interlude" an unusually attractive story.
