Arriving in Australia in the late 1930s, he composed music in a number of genres, including symphonic pieces, and works for the piano, the cello and for the voice. His music has been performed internationally. Holford founded the Australian Journal of Music : The Canon, in 1948, a journal which continued for seventeen years with Holford as editor.

In addition to his work in the Australian musical scene, Holford also wrote children's fiction and several volumes of poetry.
