At the age of five Laurens moved with her family from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to Melbourne. She was educated in Melbourne and graduated with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. After an overland journey from Katmandu to London, Laurens lived in Kent and worked as a research scientist for four years, often travelling within Europe. She returned to Australia, continuing in the research field, including cancer research, until, despairing at the lack of Regency romances to read, she wrote her own, published as Tangled Reins by Mills & Boon in 1992. After the success of her first book Laurens wrote full time and published in the United Kingdom and the US.
Laurens has also written novellas published in overseas anthologies and many of her works have been translated into other languages.
