W. F. Refshauge contends that it is likely that two contributors to the Bulletin used the pseudonym 'Surcingle'. He disputes Boake's authorship of 'His New Love and His Old Friend'. He comments further that a poem titled 'The Hospital Cat', held in the Fryer Library, The University of Queensland, signed by 'Surcingle' and dated 1930, cannot be by Boake who died in 1892. For a discussion of this see his Barcroft Boake: Collected Works, Edited with a Life(2007) 237-239.
