The author is Crawford Vaughan, an Australian politician-novelist, who was once Premier of South Australia, and has since won literary recognition with such works as "Days that Speak" and "Mr. Patrick's Love Story."
The romantic life of Adam Lindsay Gordon, the English exile who, it has been said, founded a school of Australian poetry, lends itself admirably to fictional treatment. Mr. Vaughan recreates the real Gordon—horse breaker, policeman, politician, livery stable manager, hunt club secretary, romantic lover, and poet of the great outdoors—with skilled and sympathetic pen, contributing to Australian literature a biographical novel rich in exciting episode and fascinating history.
