Gina Mercer has spoken at many workshops and conferences, and published widely in the areas of academic and feminist pedagogy most notably co-editing Postgraduate Research Supervision: Transforming (r)elations (2001) and co-writing the chapter 'Mostly Metaphors: Theorising from a Pactice of Supervision'. She has also lectured in creative writing at tertiary levels, edited the journal LiNQ: Literature in North Queensland, contributed to Perfect Diary (2000-2003, 2005), Blue Giraffe the Tasmanian poetry journal, and the electronic poetry journal papertiger. More recently based in Hobart (Tasmania), Mercer previously lived in Townsville, lecturing at James Cook University (Queensland). Her PhD thesis 'The Subversive Fiction of Janet Frame '(1989) was published as Janet Frame : Subversive Fictions (1994). In 2006, Mercer became the editor of the Tasmanian based literary journal Island.
