'He did not survive to make a mark in the postwar world or to enjoy the peace and security for which he fought, but he did leave his family with a candid and disconcerting record of the hopes and fears, triumphs and follies of three crowded years.

'Sixty-eight years on, his son and namesake has edited Mawer's war diary to reveal the impact of war, not only on the diarist but also on those who waited, worried and eventually mourned.'
