'Sue Varteg presents a collection of short stories for those who appreciate the unusual, seasoned with a dash of irony.

'Many have pondered what happens to us when we shuffle off that mortal coil. Do spirits and ghosts really exist, and if so, where would they learn the basics of haunting? Are you intrigued by mysterious, inexplicable happenings that are seemingly supernatural?

'Perhaps it's magic we're witnessing, which would account for a lot, if it truly existed. But who's to say witches are competent? And what happens if their spells fail?

'Twilight Tales may offer the answers you seek...' (Publication abstract)

Advancing in the world of dog training, I became a senior instructor, but my elevated status didn't bring with it the satisfaction I had hoped for.

I missed The Boss!

Also, my conscience troubled me; it didn't seem right for me to be teaching others to train their dogs to do that which mine could not, so I decided to enrol us in the Clever Canines Team. But we didn't cover ourselves with glory there either. Being of sound mind and thin skin I gave our notice and we left before we could be fired. However, circumstances changed when the team leader had to leave for personal reasons, and I found myself conscripted back into the team as MC.

Unfortunately, this meant I was again working without The Boss, until I finally decided that the only way to spend more quality time with him was to start doing obedience work again, and we eventually found ourselves back on the trial circuit - with unexpected results.' (Publisher's blurb)
1 y separately published work icon Delusions of Grandeur Sue Varteg , Mandurah : Equilibrium Books , 2012 Z1914699 2012 single work novel 'It had been eight months since The Boss and I first saw each other through the wire mesh of his compound, and during that time we had formed a strong bond of friendship.

Joining the Perfect Pets club with a view to learning to cope with him, as we progressed, I began to feel the first stirrings of ambition, so I set my sights on trialling, hoping we would cover ourselves in glory in the trials ring, regardless of the fact that our antics in class had failed to impress our instructors.

Despite my lack of knowledge, and The Boss's lack of obedience, I managed to teach him enough to make it into the seniors' class. By then, I was ready for anything - anything, that is, except being asked to take the trainers' course. I couldn't believe it! Our performance hadn't been particularly good in any of our classes, and on the euphoric ego trip I took following this request, I never stopped to wonder why I had been chosen for such an honour.

It would be fair to say I developed delusions of grandeur, until I overheard a conversation between Joe, my old instructor, and Brian, the head trainer. Brian had been giving me details of the trainers' course and Joe happened to be within earshot of our conversation. Unfortunately, I also heard him ask, "Are we that desperate for a trainer?" And that was when my bubble burst.' (Publisher's blurb)
1 y separately published work icon The Boss and Slave Sue Varteg , Mandurah : Equilibrium Books , 2011 Z1914696 2011 single work novel 'Anyone can train a dog, or so I was told when we brought The Boss home. Unfortunately, I'm not anyone, and by the time The Boss had finished with me, I wasn't even sure I was someone! He was a forty-kilogram German shepherd with a mind of his own, who only ever wanted to go where he wanted. As I didn't weigh much, I had no choice but to go along with him. We had never owned a dog before so this was new territory for all of us, and of course, the job of turning our hairy monster into something we could manage, fell to me. Joining a dog club was obviously the way to go, even allowing for the costs involved, which were a small price to pay when compared to the embarrassment I suffered at his paws. We were the despair of every trainer who had the misfortune of trying to teach us, but we persevered together, and in the end, we shared a remarkable bond that only a dog owner could understand.' (Publisher's blurb)
1 y separately published work icon Ye Gods Sue Varteg , Mandurah : Equilibrium Books , 2011 Z1791160 2011 single work novella fantasy

'It was not always easy being a god in the 20th Century, a realisation that the great Zeus often lamented. As his fellow gods began planning the year's Zeus Day celebrations, Zeus himself could only ponder the fact that mortals no longer revered the gods as they once had - a fact that did nothing to allay his short and sometimes unpredictable temper.

'Hera knew that she was going to have to come up with something pretty special this year to appease her husband and make life for her and the others more bearable for the eons to come. With fresh ideas decidedly scarce, the other gods spent time reviewing life on Earth to see if mere mortals could inspire them to do something different this year.

'It was all set to be pretty spectacular, especially when, at the last moment, Hera came up with the perfect gift for Zeus, which inadvertently put such a scare into Russia and America that they immediately sat down at the table for peace talks!'

'Charlie Gray, an associate with law firm Baltimore, Travis & Long, is disappointed when she is passed over for a partnership, which is given to the lesser-qualified Brendan Willis instead.

'Unable to beat the senior partners' jobs for the boys mentality, Charlie is even more surprised when the firm employs Rick Steele as the associates' new assistant. One of Charlie's high profile clients suggests that there is something suspicious about him, but she quickly dismisses the idea.

'When Charlie eventually realises that she is attracted to the mysterious Rick, she tries to forget about him, believing him to be having an affair. But everything changes when she is suddenly framed for stealing expensive antiques...'
