Playwright and theatre director Simon Stone was born in Basel, Switzerland to Australian parents. He spoke Swiss-German as a young child before moving to England with his family at the age of seven. Five years later, Stone's family returned to Australia when his father accepted a position as a departmental head at Monash University.
Stone founded the Melbourne theatre company The Hayloft Project. After four years as artistic director with Hayloft, he took up the position of resident director of Belvoir Theatre in Sydney.
In 2013, Stone directed his interpretation of the Chekhov classic The Cherry Orchard which earned him much praise from critics.
