Sam Strong trained as a lawyer, but left his career in law to study directing at the Victorian College of the Arts. Strong has worked as a dramaturg and director for various companies in Melbourne and with Company B in Sydney. On 31 May 2010 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Griffin Theatre Company.
In 2012, Strong was nominated for the Helpmann Award for Best Direction of a Play for The Boys.
