Founded by Michael McMahon and Tony Ayres in the early 2000s, Big and Little Films Pty Ltd was an independent production company working in feature films, documentary and television drama. McMahon and Ayers, who have between them written, directed and produced a number of award-winning (Australian and international) films, set up to company with the intention of establishing a committed creative partnership between a writer/script editor/director and a lawyer/producer. To 2010 the company produced the feature films The Home Song Stories (2007) and Lou (2010) and a number of documentaries, including Wildness (2003), Two Men and Two Babies (2007), Whatever Happened to Brenda Hean? (2008) and Anatomy (2008). Among the company's telemovies and series are Call me Mum (2006 telemovie) and Bogan Pride (2008 comedy series)

In 2008 Big and Little Films joined forces with Chapman Pictures, Panckhurst Productions and Cicada Films to form Matchbox Pictures, an umbrella rights, management and sales company. Two years later the company ceased production as Big and Little Films, with all subsequent productions being credited to Matchbox Pictures.
