AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Goods listed include: 19 May 1838 Rhoda for London - '7 cases returned printed books, H. Dowling.'

Notes

  • H. Dowling may be Henry Dowling (1810-1885) stationer, printer, publisher, bank manager and philanthropist. In 1837 Dowling attempted to set up a circulating library. He became embroiled in a legal dispute with S. A. Tegg over the supply of books from Tegg's London connections. This may be the reason why these books are being returned to London.
