BiographyHistory

Meyer Lutz was a German-born English composer and conductor who is best known for light music, musical theatre and burlesques of well-known works. For 25 years, beginning 1869 he was engaged as the music director of the Gaiety Theatre, London. During that time he arranging and/or composed original music and songs for many productions at the theatre, including burlesques, plays, operettas and operas. He was also music director and conductor for the first Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, Thespis, in 1871. From 1885 to 1894, when he left the Gaiety, Lutz worked under the management of leading London producer George Edwardes.

Among the writers and librettists Lutz collaborated with were: F. C. Burnand, Robert Reece, H. P. Stephens, G. R. Sims and Henry Pettitt, and Adrian Ross.
