Notes

  • Two plays were written with the title The Poacher's Wife – one by Samuel Atkyns in 1847 and the other by G. D. Pitt, also in 1847. AustLit has not yet established which version was produced in Sydney in 1868.
  • The Poacher's Wife is included in AustLit because it was produced in Australian theatres during the colonial era; and/or is the subject of Australian literary comment, adaptation or creative writing.

A review of the 30 December 1868 Royal Victoria Theatre production of The Poacher's Wife. The review also notes: 'The entertainments were concluded by a most excellent burlesque, full of local hits of great humour, in which Miss Rosa Cooper as Sir Rupert, and Mr. Andrews as Seneschal were highly successful.' The burlesque referred to is Nymph of the Botany Swamps; or, The Knight and the Naiad.
