AbstractHistoryArchive Description

An evening of 'Novel Entertainment, got up by ...[Joseph Simmons] expressly for the occasion, interspersed with Songs, Dialogues and laughable incidents ...'

As well as possible original materials on Simmons' theatrical life, the entertainment included recitations and humourous pieces from Walter Scott and Paul Pry and monologues from Shakespeare and various international dramatists. The monologues are probably those of the characters played by Simmons in past theatrical performances.

The advertisements for the entertainment published in the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser in July 1838 give the content of the show in detail.
