Trudi-Ann Tierney studied Arts Law at University but after four years as a solicitor decided to change her career direction. After a period of time working in theatre she began a seven years association with Foxtel in Australia, working as a writer and producer. In 2006, she received script development funding from Screen Australia to develop a feature film script set in Cambodia, where she lived and worked for four months. She later moved to Kabul, Afghanistan, to manage a bar but soon afterwards found herself involved with the local television industry.
Between 2009 and 2011 Tierney worked for Moby Media Group, Afghanistan's largest media company as the Head of Drama. During that time she mentored local writers and producers employed on drama productions for both Dari and Pashto language channels, and oversaw the production of eight different television serials. As a guest speaker at the 2011 Heinrich-Boll Foundation Conference in Berlin she spoke about the media’s ability to change the cultural landscape in Afghanistan.
Since 2013, Tierney has been working in Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan developing and making television, radio and film productions through Put It Out There Pictures (PIOTP), the company she co-founded with Muffy Potter She also wrote her debut book Making Soapies in Kabul. Published by Allen & Unwin in 2013 it documents her time working in Afghanistan.
In addition to her film and television career Tierney has been an actress, run a theatre company, written for the stage, and done stand-up comedy.
