It was noted in the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser (17 May 1838): 2 that the 'assemblage on Monday evening last at the Victoria Theatre, to witness the first representation of Sheridan Knowles's splendid tragedy of Virginius, surpassed in extent anything of the kind yet witnessed in the Colony'.
