Notes

  • English translation of first line: my poems are a tongue of grievance
  • A more literal translation of the poem's first line would read: 'my poems are a language of complaint'. 'Skarga', in Polish, however, is more forceful than the English word 'complaint', suggesting a sense of outrage, and with a resonance like the English word 'lament'. The Polish word 'język' can mean either 'language' or 'tongue' and here it appears to have both meanings.
