Analysis of short story: 15%
You are to analyse one of the short stories (from either Proud Flesh or the Study Kit). [NB:
You are NOT permitted to write on Hemmingways Hills Like White Elephants]. Discuss
various aspects of the narrative craft of the short story (either characterization, narrative point
of view, dialogue, plot, setting etc) and describe how these aspects contribute to the overall
impact (and success or shortcomings) of the story. This assignment is
o due by 4pm Thursday September 11th (ie end of week 7).

Assessment Criteria:
The Analysis of a Short Story will help develop critical reading, analysis and writing skills
through your acquiring an in-depth understanding of set reading material. We will assess:
Your ability to critically analyse the material
Appropriate use of some of the terminology studied so far, to support your analysis
The ability to use appropriate examples from your texts to support your argument
A well-constructed and coherent argument that clearly addresses the assignment task
Clarity of writing (i.e. correct grammar, spelling, sentence structure and progression of
ideas)
Portfolio: 70%
The portfolio is to comprise one or two short stories. It will be assessed according to how
effectively you put into practice the various narrative strategies discussed in the lectures and
workshops. It is

Assessment Criteria:
Your Portfolio will show how you have applied an understanding of the textuality of fiction in
your own creative writing. It will demonstrate your writing proficiency. I will assess:
Your ability to engage creatively and effectively with lecture and workshop discussions
and analyses of the textual features of short stories
Quality of presentation (i.e. correct grammar, spelling, sentence structure etc)
Workshop participation: 15%
Workshopping is essential to the learning experience of this course, specifically in enabling
you to develop both editing skills and teamwork skills. It is important that you contribute to
this process both through workshopping your own work and by responding to and providing
feedback on the other class members work.
