Notes

  • Author's note: ‘Mapping Coincidence’ is my tribute to WG Sebald’s brand of hybridised narrative: the fluid combination of autobiography, invention and fact. Sebald was born in 1944 in Wertach im Allgäu in Bavaria, lived much of his life East Anglia, where he also died, and preferred to be called Max by his friends. That my Max shares a name, a date of death and a gift for narrative with Sebald, is only spurious resemblance and not intended as a comment or reflection on the life of a distinguished writer.
