History

The Whitley Awards are presented annually for outstanding publications or zoological literature, or works profiling wildlife of Australia and Australasia.

The Awards offer commendations rather than awarding winners, with the exception of the Whitley Medal itself.

Notes

  • Presented annually since 1979 by the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales for excellence, primarily in text, in publications that contain a significant amount of information relating to the fauna of the Australasian region. The awards are a tribute to Gilbert Whitley, an eminent Australian ichthyologist.

    Award winners receive either the Whitley Medal or a Certificate of Commendation. The latter is awarded in many categories including: Best Illustrated Publication, Best Text, Best Field Guide, Best Reference Work, Best Historical Zoology, Best Children's Publication, Best CD-ROM, Best Limited Edition, Best Textbook and Best Video.
