History

'The CROW Award (Children Reading Outstanding Writers) was the first South Australian popular choice award. This award was run for some years by the Centre for Children's Literature at the University of South Australia as part of its activities to promote children's literature, but after 1998 it went into recess due to (the all-too common!) difficulties finding volunteers to administer it.

'However, in 2003 it was resurrected as the Kanga Awards by a consortium of bookshops, government and enthusiast bodies. There were two lists each for Years 3-5 and 6-7, expanded to include R-2 in 2004. The Kanga Award is for the popular vote for any title, and the Focus list is limited to Australian titles.'
