This annual award is arranged by the Australian National Playwrights' Centre (ANPC), supported by the Literature Board of the Australia Council. In an exchange program with New Dramatists in New York, an Australian playwright is chosen to work for three weeks at the home of New Dramatists, and a New Dramatists' playwright is included in the workshop program at the ANPC Conference in Australia.
The Australian playwright is chosen by a competition. Five entries are shortlisted and submitted to New Dramatists' selection panel. The ANPC New Dramatists Exchange is open only to Australian residents.
