History

The Tasmania Book Prizes are sponsored by the Tasmanian Government, and awarded biennially.

In September 2021, the Minister for the Arts announced that the prizes, due to be announced in late 2021, would instead be announced in 2022, and would be renamed the Tasmanian Literary Awards. The Tasmanian Government increased its biennial prize money investment to $100,000, and introduced six new prize categories:

  • a prize for fiction ($25 000)
  • a prize for non-fiction ($25 000)
  • a prize for young readers and children ($25 000)
  • a prize for Indigenous writing ($10 000)
  • a prize for poetry and short stories ($10 000)
  • a young writers fellowship ($5 000)

This was the first substantial change in the awards since 2007.
