Notes

  • 'Alva Probert, a keen amateur writer, suggested that the University of the Third Age, Knox (then the U3A Ferntree Gully), sponser an open writing competition. With the agreement of the management committee, this ran with independent judges from 1995 for two years. Alva was a founding member of the Ferntree Gully U3A and was on the management committee for several years and started the first book discussion group. Following her sudden death, the competition was renamed the Alva Probert Memorial Short Story Competition in recognition of her significant involvement. It has attracted entries from short story writers and poets across Australia.' (Source: Award Winning Australia Writing 2008)
