Sally is a girl born with cerebral palsy. Her mother, Maisie, struggles to persuade her father Vince to take care of her until Uncle Blue books Sally a place at the Baths. The Baths are rumored to enable people to walk. Vince, re-energised, devotes himself to trying to make Sally walk.
The story is told in four perspectives: Maisie's, Maisie's mother's, Uncle Blue's, and Sally herself. At the end, Sally reveals that the real miracle was that Vince ever spent time with her, not the few steps she's managed to take.
