AbstractHistoryArchive Description

' Iqbal Chaudhary is fortyish, but the mid-life crisis he faces is more complex than many. His Australian marriage has collapsed, his past surfaces to bother his conscience and he feels a compulsive need to go back to the country he left immediately after the war with Pakistan, eighteen years earlier. But his reception from family and friends is deeply mixed. Iqbal is forced to confront why he left Bangladesh and how he feels about his family as well as his native country whose poverty, squalor and overcrowding make him react involuntarily with the squeamishness of a Westerner.'

The Making of the Asian Australian Novel Emily Yu Zong , 2023 single work criticism
— Appears in: The Cambridge History of the Australian Novel 2023;

'The making of the Asian Australian novel is the unmaking of oppressive notions of history, subjectivity and literary form. Locating ethnic representational politics within power structures of race and nation, this chapter contends that Asian Australian identity is a site of hybrid instability realised through nonlinear forms of storytelling. The chapter examines national and diasporic paradigms across historical and contemporary trajectories of this literature: earlier Chinese Australian novels that blur boundaries between fictional and factual claims; Bildungsroman novels that trouble ethnocentric narratives of either assimilation or return; multicultural novels that unveil ongoing racism in liberal-pluralist ideals; and transnational novels that reimagine the Australian relationship with postcolonial and globalising Asian modernity. Reflecting on the limits of a critical humanist agenda, the chapter identifies an alternative paradigm of Asian Australian storytelling that employs speculative tactics to depict the land, species, climate change and Asian–Indigenous connections. This ecocritical paradigm challenges a normative ideal of the modern, autonomous and sovereign individual as one the migrant subject should integrate into, while pointing to an under-explored terrain for Asian Australian writers whose focus on diversity and justice would offer important insights into the shifting human condition.'

‘No Better or Worse than Anyone, but an Equal’ : Negotiating Mutuality in Adib Khan’s 'Seasonal Adjustments' Stefano Mercanti , 2012 single work criticism
— Appears in: JASAL , vol. 12 no. 2 2012;
In this article, after a brief consideration of the limitations revolving around South Asian Australian writers as an under-researched literary category, I use Riane Eisler’s partnership and dominator models to explore the complexities of cultural belonging, seen as a new narrative of unique experience, through which a distinctive transcultural identity is fluidly forged beyond the expectations and ideals of dominant nationalist cultures and traditions. By particularly focusing on Adib Khan’s novel Seasonal Adjustments, this analysis suggests that his migrant identity should be understood as a dialectical ever-growing process, enabling him to link cultural differences as transcultural global constants. 'Displacement leads to a high sensitivity to space and its potential to affect constructions of identity. Immigrants are continually confronted with the questions of who belongs to a country and who a country belongs to. In this paper I examine representations of Australia in two novels by writers of South Asian origin resident in Australia, Yasmine Gooneratne's A Change of Skies (1991) and Adib Khan's Seasonal Adjustments (1994). In doing so, I argue for a transcultural reading of Australia's position as an ambivalent diasporic location: white, Anglophone, but situated outside the 'western' centre.' (Author's abstract p. 154)

The article discusses the Indo-Australian connection in three novels which focus on migrant characters and the issues of assimilation and integration. The author tries to 'signal the changes that have occurred within Australian society in the attitude towards non-European immigrants, but equally the changing attitudes of immigrants themselves towards Australia and Australians' (77).
