Described in advertising as an 'original Australia revuestical [sic] pantomime, and set in the New South Wales Blue Mountains, The Blue Goanna 'is purely and simply an Australian story of a lost mine guarded by a band of golden maidens and a blue goanna' (Townsville Daily Bulletin 2 August 1926, p.3).

Production Details

  • 1925: Sydney; ca. Dec. (6 weeks season)

    • Although the The Northern Star (Lismore) records that the production had been written especially for the the troupe's debut Sydney season, no details regarding that engagement have yet been located (11 October 1926, p.6).

    1926: Theatre Majestic, Brisbane; 31 May -

    • Producer Union Theatres; Director Agnes Rahilly-Brown;
    • Troupe: Sunshine Kiddies.
    • Cast incl.Cast incl. Carmen Burgess (Raymond, The Gypsy King), Joe Lawman (Dame Tucker), Jack Warren (Nutty Noodle, the Lost King), Nancy Zumpner (Tommy Tucker, a Harem Scarem), Doreen Albert (Golden Locks, the King's daughter); Gladys Titoff (The Gypsy Queen), Marino Albert (Bluey, the Goanna), Iris Rice (Mamon, the Spirit of Gold); Gypsy Dancing Girls: Dorothy Brown (Nora), Mona Sugrue (Cora), Viviene Rice, Myrtle White (Dora); Other characters incl. Gypsy Girls, Elves, Spirits.
    • This engagement marked the Sunshine Kiddies' return to their home city of Brisbane after "a triumphant tour of the Southern States. Although the The Blue Goanna was reportedly staged in Sydney previously no dates have yet been confirmed.
    • The troupe comprised some 40 children.

    1926: North Queensland regional tour; ca. June-Aug.

    • Cast and production mostly as for previous Brisbane season.
    • Established dates for this production are: Charters Towers (Superlative Theatre; 12 July -); Cairns; (Tropical Theatre; 24-31 July); Townsville (Theatre Royal; 2-4 August).
