AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The script held in the Crawford Collection in the AFI Research Collection contains the following character notes (excluding regular characters):

'WENDY MASON: A nice young kid of ten or eleven who is in the middle of a love affair with an old bay horse - "GEORGE".

'ALFONSO, THE GREAT: A ventriloquist, one of the old timers who refused to die with vaudeville when television slaughtered it all those years ago. The airs and style of "THE GRAND OLD DAYS" he once used as a front have now become real and are a genuine part of his character. However, it cuts no ice with his cheeky, young dummy, Willie.

'CHARLIE HUNT: The Knackery Manager. A curt man made coarse and almost callous by his calling. (TRUCK DRIVING REQUIRED).

'JOHN and TOM: Two young boys about twelve. John is more of a leader than his mate.

'2 HORSES: Both old, but "GEORGE" is a year or two older than "HANNIBAL".'

      Note/s:
      • The Crawford Collection holds two copies of this file, both copied on blue paper and both with two cover pages: an illustrated outer cover page and a second cover page including crew details.
      • Copy one is labelled 'Code: 23502'. There is no indication on this script of to whom this copy of the script was designated. There are no signs of annotation on this copy of the script.
      • Copy 2 is also labelled 'Code: 23502', but the '23' has been struck out in lead pencil and replaced with '12'. Otherwise, the cover page is identical to that of copy 1, complete with the absence of any indication of to whom this copy of the script was designated. This copy of the script is heavily annotated throughout in red ink. The annotations appear to be in the same hand as the red-ink annotations on the script for episode one. The annotations are alterations to the dialogue. These annotations have not been incorporated into copy 1.
      • The file also contains the following ancillary material:
        1. Cast list: a type-written cast list, with no confidential information.
        2. 8pp. copy of the script stripped to nothing but dialogue, copied on white paper. This script incorporates the alterations to dialogue made in copy 2 above.
