The poem depicts a child, alienated from her family, as she leaves her house to wander to the end of the nearby road, imagining it to be the other side of the world. At the same time, there is the implication that the poem represents the author's memory of her childhood self and her knowledge, in hindsight, that she was destined to leave her birthplace for a country on the other side of the world.
