The paper underwent a number of changes in name during its early years. It commenced as the Elsternwick Leader and East Brighton, South Brighton, Cheltenham, Mentone, Mordialloc, Oakleigh, Sandringham, Balaclava and Caulfield Record, but this was changed to the Elsternwick Leader and Caulfield and Balaclava Guardian for the second issue. That name, however, lasted for two editions (23 and 30 July 1887). Several minor changes in name followed until its publisher eventually settled on the Caulfield and Elsternwick Leader (as of 18 February 1888).
