Rider Haggard's imperial romance Jess, first published in serialised form in 1886 and 1887, and set during the first Anglo-Boer War (1880-81). While Scott's drama is similarly set in South Africa, he blended events from the then current 1899-1902 war into Haggard's original storyline. One significant difference, for example, was the introduction of South African leader, Paul Kruger and his wife.
