This article explores the rich interplay between visual art and the literary arts as represented in artist’s books and fine press publications, describing and discussing some exemplary works and collaborations created by practitioners engaged with the idea that poetry and the visual arts form a natural marriage within the structure of a ‘book’. The books in this context are possessed of multiple layers of meaning, referents, literary and visual allusions and are a part of a tradition where these two art forms create material objects to be experienced spatially rather than as a line to follow.
