This poem is included in the story '
First Impressions' by V. V. (fl. 1850-1852). It is ostensibly written by story's main character, Miss Kitty Gibson, as she wanders the beach of Corio Bay while contemplating the experience of the English emigrant: 'I wished to be there [England], and yet I was content to be here. For a while, after reaching Australia, one feels there are two homes in the world, both having their several attractions and inducements. At length, the Australian home stood uppermost in my estimation, and, for the time, my enthusiasm carried me into the regions of poetry.' (p. 10)
