The poem begins with words evoking a well-known Polish marching song, 'Bywaj, dziewczę, zdrowe' (Be well, girl), addressed by a soldier to the sweetheart he's leaving behind. Here the words are changed to 'Be well, sister', i.e. addressed by a soldier to his sister.
