AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The poem recalls the author's and her brother's shared childhood in Lvov before the Second World War, and laments the distance that now separates them (he living in Scotland, she in Tasmania), which they never imagined as children.

Notes

  • English translation of the title: Naive Song
  • English translation of first line: 'Be well, sister
  • Dedication: Mojemu Jedynemu Bratu [To My Only Brother]
  • The poem begins with words evoking a well-known Polish marching song, 'Bywaj, dziewczę, zdrowe' (Be well, girl), addressed by a soldier to the sweetheart he's leaving behind. Here the words are changed to 'Be well, sister', i.e. addressed by a soldier to his sister.
