'Ułani' or Uhlans are light cavalry. It is a term specific to Polish and Central/Eastern European military history, and derives from the Turkic Tatar 'oglan', meaning young man or brave warrior. The name was taken on among cavalry in Poland in the 18th century. It is a word with strong, Romantic connotations of courage and patriotism.
