'When Bertels was appointed Sydney Festival director last year, he felt this was a story that was begging to be told. He approached Queensland Theatre Company director and award-winning playwright Wesley Enoch, an indigenous man from Stradbroke Island, and the pair began to nut out some ideas. Nicknamed The Black Diggers, the large-scale theatrical work is being co-produced with QTC and will be premiered at the Sydney Festival in January 2014 as part of the international commemorations marking the centenary of World War I.'
