The poem is a series of invented aphorisms about bridge attributed to various historic figures Polish and otherwise ranging from the Polish writer Maria Konopnicka to Confucius, Marco Polo and Nixon, as well as well-known fictional characters from Polish literature.

  • English translation of the title: Only for Bridge-Players
  • English translation of first line: There's no great art to playing an ace -
  • The poem is headed by a long prose preface, which begins: 'Zawsze zastanawiała mnie i peszyła niewymieralność i nieodmienność polskich powiedzonek brydżowych' [I've always wondered about and been bothered by the persistence and unchanging character of Polish sayings about bridge].
